Two arrested in Big Island assault

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have captured two men suspected of assaulting a Keaukaha man on Saturday.

Detective Tom Poy said the suspects — ages 32 and 25 — were being held at the Hilo police cellblock after their Monday arrests.

They may be charged soon, he said.

Meanwhile, Poy identified Darrell Wheeler, 33, as the victim of the attack. Wheeler remained in critical condition with head injuries at Hilo Medical Center.

Details of the dispute leading up to the assault were not revealed. Wheeler was found by police unconscious on the ground Saturday afternoon just off Kalaniana'ole Avenue.
