Man suspected in bank robbery

Police yesterday arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of robbing Bank of Hawaii's main branch at 111 S. King St. on Oct. 8. The man was arrested at O'ahu Community Correctional Center, where he is being held for offenses unrelated to the robbery.

Woman unhurt after ridge stay

A 36-year-old woman from Memphis, Tenn., today walked out safely after spending the night on a ridge in Wai'anae Valley. Irma VanDam and her husband had gone for a hike and became separated yesterday.

She was reported missing by her husband at 4:15 p.m., and fire rescue specialists searched until 10 p.m. "She was to the west of where we were searching, up on a ridge, and heard us calling her," Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said. "But we couldn't hear her."

VanDam made it out of the valley on her own at 7:10 a.m. and was not injured, Tejada said.

McCully victim is identified

The medical examiner's office today identified the man who died Saturday after a confrontation with police in McCully as Garfield Crosbourne, 37.

Police were trying to arrest Crosbourne on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and used pepper spray on him when he allegedly resisted arrest.

Fugitive caught in Wai'anae

Police arrested fugitive Preston Baltazar Tuesday in Wai'anae. Baltazar, 21, was wanted on four outstanding court warrants and as a witness in the murder trial involving the beating death of William Van Winkle at Wai'anae District Park in July 2001. A CrimeStoppers tip led police to Baltazar.

Man arrested in bank heist

Bank robbery arrests don't come any easier than the one Honolulu police made Tuesday in Mo'ili'ili.

Instead of approaching a teller at First Hawaiian Bank's University branch at 2411 S. King St., a man allegedly handed a customer service officer a note demanding money, police said. He then permitted the bank employee to get the money. The employee called police, who arrested the man.
