THE LEFT LANE
Plan on Van's at Kualoa

We're heading into the 10-day countdown to the Van's Triple Crown Surf Fest, with its celebration of rock, reggae and skateboarding — and, oh yeah, surfing! — from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 10 at Kualoa Ranch.

Inspired by the Big Mele and Reggae in the Country events, it marks the 20th anniversary of the Van's Triple Crown, and features ... Slightly Stoopid, a rock/reggae/ ska/punk band appearing in many an extreme video. (Hey, we didn't name 'em.)

Headliners are The Marleys, a brother act by Damian "Jr. Gong" and Julian, sons of the legendary Bob Marley. There's more: Pennywise, a fave on the punk circuit, Face to Face, as seen on MTV, and Long Beach Short Bus, formerly the Long Beach Dub Allstars. Local acts include Generic, Go Jimmy Go, Ooklah the Moc and Pepper.

Roxy Pro female surfers and world pro competitors, past and present, will be on hand. And top pro skateboarders Neal Hendrix, Omar Hassan, Steve Caballero and Mike Crum will demonstrate their skills on a 20-foot half-pipe track. Tickets: $22 in advance, $28 at the door. Charge by phone at 526-4400 or go to ticketplushawaii.com.

Just play it safe

To make Halloween enjoyable and safe for everyone, the Honolulu Police Department asks drivers to be on the lookout for trick-or-treaters and offers the following safety tips:

• Use a light-colored costume, reflective tape or a flashlight if out after dark. (That means you, Dracula!)

• Don't carry sharp or pointy objects as costume props. (Yes, that includes the carving knife.)

• Young children should be accompanied by parents; older children should trick-or-treat in groups.

• Visit only homes with their front lights on.

• Inspect the goodies before you chomp on them.
