New chairwoman for Kailua board
The Kailua Neighborhood Board has elected Kathy Bryant-Hunter as its new chairwoman. She replaces Faith Evans, who resigned for medical reasons.
Bryant-Hunter has been on the board for six years. She's employed as a facilitator at Dispute Prevention and Resolution, a mediation, arbitration and facilitation company. Her focus there is on environmental and land-use planning.
The board will elect a vice chair and secretary at its next meeting, at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Kailua District Park Multipurpose Room.
Leroy Colombe and Brenda Lumeng were also elected to fill vacant positions on the board for Sub-Districts 2 and 3, respectively.
Fund-raiser helps Windward schools
Windward families will participate in a Read To Me one-mile run/walk to raise money for books and newspapers for their schools beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Windward Community College.
The event will include readers from the Family Book Festival, arts and craft activities, the Keiki Farm petting zoo and Scholastic Book Fair.
Participating schools will earn $7 for every registered runner they recruit.
The event is sponsored by Read To Me International Foundation, Windward Community College, The Advertiser's Newspapers in Education Program and Hawai'i Pizza Hut.

Keiki Karnival is tomorrow
Kamiloiki Elementary School will hold its annual Keiki Karnival from 2:15 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the school's campus, 7788 Hawai'i Kai Drive. The carnival is open to the public and features rides, games, a white elephant table and food.

Flight canceled after slide opens
An American Airlines flight from Kona to Los Angeles was canceled Tuesday night after one of the emergency slides accidentally deployed.
Flight 247 was scheduled to leave at 10:05 p.m., but a cabin cleaner bumped the lever that triggers the slide, said Tara Baten, a spokeswoman for American Airlines. No passengers were on board at the time.
The 757 aircraft had to be flown, empty, to Los Angeles for repairs, Baten said.
About 200 passengers were lodged overnight at the King Kamehameha Hotel in Kona and were expected to leave tonight on the same scheduled flight, said Robert Mohler, a passenger from Dana Point, Calif.
Seniors focus of Kaua'i fair
LIHU'E, Kaua'i The fourth Kaua'i County Health Fair, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kukui Grove Center, will feature a range of products and services available to senior citizens.
People can pick up senior identification cards, get flu shots and check on other services.

Hirono, Lingle debate for OHA
Mazie Hirono and Linda Lingle will discuss Native Hawaiian issues at an Office of Hawaiian Affairs gubernatorial forum, set for 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Imin International Center, University of Hawai'i-Manoa.
The event, which will be telecast live on KFVE, is the second of OHA's gubernatorial forums. Lingle did not attend the first, which spotlighted the primary election candidates Sept. 9.
The forum, free and open to the public, will be moderated by Nani Lee, OHA programs director.
A stew and rice dinner, also free, will be served at 6 p.m. OHA also is paying for parking on campus.

TV forum tonight on elections
This year's election campaigns and the democratic process will be the focus of a live TV forum tonight as part of the series sponsored by 'Olelo Community Television.
The forum will air from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oceanic Channel 54 and Oceanic Digital Control.
Participants will be Jean Aoki of the League of Women Voters, Larry Meacham of Common Cause, Jacqueline Parnell of the Hawaii Pro-Democracy Initiative, Lurline McGregor of 'Olelo and Dwayne Yoshina of the state elections office.
