Second-ranked UNLV in UH tourney field

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will be joined by second-ranked UNLV and 17 other teams in the UH/Turtle Bay Invitational, Monday and Tuesday at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course. The tournament concludes Hawai'i's fall season.

Golfers will play 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday. There will be a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start each day. UH junior Matt Kodama is defending champion.

The Warriors are coming off a last-place finish at last week's Barona Collegiate Cup. Hawai'i shot 295 the final day — its best round of the tournament — but could not make up any ground on the 17-team field.

Host San Diego State won the event and Aztec John Lepak tied for medalist honors. SDSU, No. 32 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, will play at Turtle Bay along with defending champion Virginia.

Tennessee, ranked 44th, and No. 50 South Carolina are also in the field. UH-Hilo is among a trio of NCAA Division II teams playing. Osaka Gakuin University of Japan and Australia's International Pacific College are also competing.

Individually, UNLV's Ryan Moore is ranked seventh and SDSU's Charlie Smith 68th. Ian Parnaby of TennesseeÊis 77th and UNLV's Jason Deacon (81) and Brien Davis (88) are also in the top 100.

UH sophomore Ben Douglas finished at 72—219 last week to tie for 39th and lead the Rainbows. Manarii Gauthier

(74—223) was next, followed by Kodama (73—226), Kellen-Floyd Asao (76—228) and James Beston (80—237).

• Charities benefit: The 25th City Bank Helps golf tournament at Pearl Country Club on Oct. 17 raised $23,100 for three O'ahu organizations i Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation, Hawai'i Meals on Wheels and the Military Aviation Museum of the Pacific, which plans to open on Dec. 7, 2005, at Ford Island.

Over the years, the bank's charity tournament on O'ahu has raised $351,775. In addition, City Bank's benefit event on Maui for the past 14 years raised more than $270,000 and its Hilo fund-raiser has generated $223,775 in 22 years. The total for all three tournaments is nearly $846,000.
