Police catch one of 10 escaped girls

Advertiser Staff

One of the 10 teenage girls who escaped from the Hawai'i Youth Correction Facility in Kailua Saturday was apprehended today, police said, and the other nine remained at large tonight.

Police said the girl was caught at 4:52 p.m. in the area of Pahia Road and the Kamehameha Highway. Her age was not available. Officials have not released the names of any of the girls, all of them ages 14 to 17, because they are minors.

Officials said the girls escaped at 12:33 p.m. yesterday after overpowering two guards and stealing an unmarked white 1998 Ford Windstar van license number GXT 744.

All of the girls were wearing blue prison uniforms.
