The Denver Broncos yesterday waived former University of Hawai'i quarterback Nick Rolovich.
"I tell you what, it was nothing but a good experience," Rolovich told The Advertiser. "I learned a lot, and maybe this will help me get another job."
NFL teams usually keep three quarterbacks, and there was speculation that the Broncos would sign Rolovich to their practice squad, which does not count against the roster limit of active players. But Rolovich said he was not optimistic the Broncos would put a quarterback on the practice squad.
Any NFL team can claim a player placed on waivers. If no claim is placed, the player is declared a free agent. Rolovich said he will remain on the Mainland until the waiver period is over. If he is not re-signed by the Broncos or picked up by another team, he will return to Hawai'i to complete work on his bachelor's degree.
"It was a numbers game," he said. "I understand that. But I had a great time."
Rolovich played in only one preseason game passing for 50 yards and scoring on a 1-yard run in Denver's 31-0 victory over Seattle on Thursday.
Meanwhile, former UH defensive tackle Maa Tanuvasa was waived by the Atlanta Falcons yesterday.
Tanuvasa, a nine-year NFL veteran, played at UH from 1990-'92. The Mililani High graduate began his career with the Los Angeles Rams, and also played for the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers.
