BYUH upsets No. 1 Barry in volleyball

Yu Chuan Weng had 17 kills as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat defending Division II national women's volleyball champion Barry, 30-20, 30-26, 30-21, yesterday to win the Barry Invitational in Miami.

The victory ended Barry's 23-match winning streak dating to last season. Barry was ranked

No. 1 in the Division II pre-season poll, BYUH was 26th.

Weng, who averaged 5.8 kills and 3.3 digs per tournament game, was named the tournament's most valuable player. Teammates Chun Yi Lin and Kaalo Lo also were named to the all-tournament team.

Earlier in the day, Weng, a 5-10 freshman from Taiwan, had 17 kills as BYUH (3-0) defeated Mercy College (N.Y.), 30-17, 30-17, 30-14. Lin added 15 kills.


MORE VOLLEYBALL

• HPU defeats UH-Hilo: Susy Garbelotti had 27 kills and Teisa Fotu 12 to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 22-30, 30-26, 30-22, 30-15 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at the 9th Annual KTA Super Stores/Bank of Hawai'i Hawaiian Style Classic at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Sara Pilgreen had 17 kills and Heidi Fabritz 13 for Hilo.

HPU is 3-1 in the tournament, Hilo is 1-3. Northwood University of Texas and North Dakota lead the tournament with 4-0 records.

In today's games, at 8 a.m., Wayne State plays Evergreen State and East Texas Baptist plays UH-Hilo. In the semifinals at 10 a.m., Northern State plays Northwood and North Dakota plays Hawai'i Pacific. Matches are also scheduled for noon and 2 p.m.

In other matches yesterday, Wayne State (Neb.) defeated UH-Hilo, 26-30, 30-22, 21-30, 30-27, 15-13; Northwood (Texas) defeated East Texas Baptist, 30-15, 30-14, 30-24; North Dakota defeated Evergreen State (Wash.), 30-18, 30-20, 30-7; HPU defeated Northern State (S.D.), 30-32, 30-20, 33-31, 23-30, 15-13; North Dakota defeated East Texas Baptist, 35-33, 30-15, 30-15; Northern State defeated Wayne State, 30-25, 30-17, 30-21, and Northwood defeated Evergreen State, 30-18, 30-14, 30-15.

• Chaminade splits: Chaminade lost to No. 13 Metro State (Colo.) then defeated host St. Mary's (Texas) to finish 3-1 in the St. Mary's Invitational Tournament at San Antonio, Texas.

Metro State swept the Silverswords, 30-20, 30-19, 30-28. Chaminade defeated St. Mary's, 20-30, 30-27, 30-19, 24-30, 15-5.

Valasi Sepulona had 11 kills against Metro State and 17 kills against St. Mary's to lead the Silverswords. She was named to the all-tournament team.


BASEBALL

• McCully wins: Lance Belen and Aaron Lum each had three hits to lead the McCully AJA baseball team to a 13-8 victory over the Gardena (Calif.) Rebels in the first day of the 50th California State AA Baseball Tournament at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

The McCully team was invited as part of the 50th anniversary of the tournament, which runs through tomorrow.
