• The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU is offering free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., provide advice on business startup, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small-business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, the Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, the Hawai'i Women's Business Center, and SCORE. The program, open to all clients of the center who attended its orientation, is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesdays or 2 p.m. Thursdays at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave. (#A). • The emergence of the real estate industry into the global arena — and the use of computers and Internet to increase business beyond the local geographic area — will be the focus of the annual PACIFIC RIM REAL ESTATE CONFERENCE, hosted in Honolulu by the Hawai'i Association of Realtors. The conference is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Sheraton Waikiki. The keynote speaker will be Allan Dalton, executive vice president of Coldwell Banker Hunnemann, who will discuss challenges facing real estate agents and companies. Fee. Information: 733-7060.

SATURDAY

• How Hawai'i compares with other states in terms of business, taxes and regulations will be the focus of a panel discussion sponsored by the GRASSROOT INSTITUTE OF HAWAI'I. Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform in Washington will speak. Other participants will be moderator Randall Roth, University of Hawai'i Law School professor, and Lowell Kalapa, president of the Tax Foundation of Hawai'i. • A workshop on retirement planning and rolling over your distribution by Edward Jones will be offered to former city and state employees participating in 457 deferred compensation plans. • How to weatherproof your portfolio in turbulent markets will be the subject of an investment program by Edward Jones. Rhodora Pagay, the Edward Jones investment representative in Honolulu, will be host for the event, open to investors seeking high-quality opportunities in the stock market.
