That's what Friends are for

The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council's After-School Class Initiative recently got a boost from Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc. PAAC received a $5,000 grant to fund a new public school class site for the 2002-2003 school year.

The After-School Class Initiative is part of PAAC's global education outreach program to high schools statewide. PAAC and the Radford High School International Learning Center offer for-credit classes after school called "Upload the World: Global Studies and Media Literacy."

The Friends of Hawaii Charities is the event host of the Sony Open in Hawaii, and has given more than $2 million to Hawai'i charities since 1999.

Goodwill gets cash for truck

Goodwill has been awarded $5,000 by Tesoro Hawaii Corporation toward the purchase of a medium-sized box truck. The truck will help Goodwill handle donations from the community.

Goodwill is well known for its donated goods and retail sales operations. The agency has worked to increase donations to ensure a continuous level of goods to support its human-service programs.

Goodwill has 17 donation sites in various community neighborhoods and shopping centers throughout O'ahu to increase donor convenience.

Goodwill workers have operated under the philosophy of "community service through the power of work" since 1902. Locally last year, Goodwill served more than 2,200 people and reported $10.2 million in revenues. With Goodwill's assistance, 700 people found jobs in the local community last year.

More than 90 percent of money received by the agency is channeled into programs and services.
