West leads at Barbers Point; Wie in sixth

Defending champion Mark West shot a 68 yesterday to take a four-stroke lead after the second round of the Barbers Point Invitational.

Punahou School 12-year-old Michelle Wie shot a 73 yesterday and is in sixth with a 146.

West's total is 137. John Bascuk is at 141 and Blaine Kimura and Earl Medeiros are third with 144s.


VOLLEYBALL

• Bown helps U.S. to win: Keba Phipps scored 16 points and University of Hawai'i alum Heather Bown added 13 points as the United States beat the Dominican Republic, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21, yesterday in the Women's Volleyball World Championships at Riesa, Germany.

Phipps, an outside hitter, had 15 kills and one block. She had no errors in 19 attempts.

Bown, a middle blocker, had 10 kills, two aces and one block.

The U.S. improved to 3-0 in Pool C.

• Hawaiian Style Classic: North Dakota defeated Northwood (Mich.), 30-21, 15-30, 30-27, 30-28, in the final of the Hawaiian Style Classic yesterday at Hilo civic.

Hawai'i Pacific beat Northern State (S.D.) in the third-place match, 30-24, 30-22, 29-31, 30-24.

Hawai'i-Hilo was swept by Wayne State (Neb.) in the consolation championship.


MEETING

• Jones at Na Koa meeting: June Jones, University of Hawai'i head football coach and George Lumpkin, associate head coach, will talk about Saturday's game against Eastern Illinois at today's Na Koa Football Club luncheon at the All Star Cafe in Waikiki.

The luncheon, open to the public, begins at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $12. The All Star Cafe is on Kalakaua at Nike Center. Parking is free with validation.

TENNIS

• UH grad wins: University of Hawai'i graduate Lynn Novack and her mother, Toni, won the USTA National Mother/Daughter Grass Open, defeating Patty and Dora Kinghorn (Fla.), 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), yesterday at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

The Novacks, who are from Jacksonville, Fla., defeated the No. 1 seeds Susan and Jody Davis of San Diego, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the finals. The Novacks were unseeded.


CLIFF DIVING

• Australia's Zuber wins: Australia's Joe Zuber won the Red Bull Cliff Diving 2002 event Saturday at Lana'i.

Zuber scored 470.6 points to beat Russia's Sergey Zotin (347.1). Vyacheslav Polyeshuk of the Ukraine (339.6) placed third.

Divers jumped 86 feet from Kahekili's leap, known as the birthplace of cliff diving, located on the sacred Kaunolu cliffs.


BASEBALL

• McCully triumphs: Lance Belen batted 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Aaron Lum went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as McCully beat the Gardena Knights (Calif.), 9-2, yesterday in the 50th California State Nisei AA Baseball Tournament in Los Angeles.

Duane Ito, Mark Okano and Steve Otani each had three hits for McCully.
