Red Sox call up Agbayani, 3 others

Associated Press

NEW YORK Minor league outfielder Benny Agbayani, pitcher Josh Hancock, and infielders Shane Andrews and Freddy Sanchez are scheduled to be called up to the Boston Red Sox today.

Pitcher Wayne Gomes and catcher Kevin Brown already had been added to the major league active roster since it expanded from 25 to 40 on Sunday. The latest additions were announced yesterday, after Triple-A Pawtucket's season ended.

Agbayani, 30, was claimed off waivers Aug. 26. He hit .205 with four homers and 19 RBIs in 48 games this season with Colorado.

He has split the season between the Rockies and the club's Triple-A team in Colorado Springs.

In parts of five major league seasons, the former Hawaii Pacific University star has a .273 career average with 57 doubles, 39 home runs and 148 RBIs.

Andrews was voted Pawtucket's MVP by his teammates. He hit .256 with 22 home runs and 63 RBIs. The 31-year-old has played with Montreal and Chicago in parts of six major league seasons.

Hancock, 24, started the season in Double-A Trenton. The right-hander was 4-2, with a 3.45 ERA in eight starts after being promoted to Pawtucket.

Sanchez, 23, also began the season at Trenton. Sanchez, a shortstop, entered Monday's game hitting .307, with 28 RBIs since being promoted to Pawtucket in July.
