Kitties and cancer

A Tufts University study reports that cats living in homes where people smoke cigarettes are more than twice as likely to acquire feline lymphoma cancer. The research calls into question the believe that the major cause of feline cancer was the feline lymphoma virus.

The study may further indicate second-hand smoke and lymphoma in humans are linked, one of the scientists said. Researchers hope the report will offer animal lovers another reason to stop smoking. See enews.tufts.edu.

TV premiers delayed

It used to be that premiere week started with a load of new shows opening in one week. Then networks started rolling out the shows one by one for a month, so each could get a publicity push.

This year, most networks will pause Sept. 11 for anniversary coverage. Only "The Drew Carey Show" will have its season premiere before that date. The next premiere will be Sept. 12, when "Family Affair" bows on WB. The last new show to come along will be "The Grubbs" on Fox Nov. 3.

Derrick Malama
New morning voice

That new voice making its way into your groggy morning mind on Hawai'i Public Radio is Derrick Malama, who took over as local host for National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" in August. Former host Beth Ann Kozlovich finally had enough of coming in at 4 each morning (she's continuing her Town Square program, 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays on KIPO FM 98.3).

Malama graduated from Damien High School and Gonzaga University. He has worked at radio stations in Spokane, Wash., and Seattle, and developed the Hawaiian music channel for Muzak Corp. He joined HPR as a part-time board operator and rose to listener services coordinator. He continues to produce KIPO's Hawaiian music show. He doesn't sleep.
