West defends his Barbers Point Invitational crown

Mark West shot a final-round 75 yesterday to defend his Barbers Point Invitational title with a 4-under-par total of 212.

John Basuck finished four strokes behind, after also shooting a 3-over 75 in the final round.

Punahou School 12-year-old Michelle Wie finished at 2-over 218, shooting a final-round 72.

West won last year's tournament with a 211 total. In July, he captured the Amatour's Coral Creek Classic.

VOLLEYBALL

• U.S. unbeaten: Logan Tom scored a match-high 17 points and former University of Hawai'i standout Heather Bown added 12 to lead the U.S. women's national volleyball team to a sweep of previously unbeaten Puerto Rico on the fourth day of pool play at the 2002 Women's Volleyball World Championships at Dresden, Germany, yesterday.

Bown had 10 kills, one block and an ace in guiding the United States to a 25-13, 27-25, 25-19 win in Pool C.

Team USA (4-0) is one of four teams that remain unbeaten through pool play. Italy, Korea and China are also undefeated through four matches.

TENNIS

• Kapalua Open Championships: Sean O'Connor of Irvine, Calif., beat Stuart Duncan in three sets yesterday to capture the men's open title at the Kapalua Open Championships at the Kapalua Tennis Garden on Maui.

O'Connor won, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6.

In the women's open division, former Brigham Young University-Hawai'i player Petra Gaspar beat Seabury Hall senior Jessica Konrad, 6-4, 6-4, for the championship.
