THE LEFT LANE
Flower power, Book Club deadline

Flower-pot power
Looking for something to put those Kamuela roses in? Sunset Magazine suggests you try using an unusual container to complement the blooms. Richard Salvaggio, past president of the American Institute of Floral Designs, suggests looking around the house where you'll find appropriate shapes in everyday object. Looking for a ball-shaped container with a small mouth? Try a teapot it's already waterproof and colorful, and the spout and handles add character. For a trumpet-shaped container, try a small basket-weave tote with handles, or a child's tote with the flowers arranged in plastic cups inside.
One suggestion, the "cache pot," is perfect for Hawai'i. Think squat with a wide mouth and a base typically between 4 and 6 inches, and try Uncle Glen's natty beach hat. Invert hat, insert a souffle dish to hold water. Voila!
Tomorrow is the deadline to participate in the discussion of the current Honolulu Advertiser Book Club selection, "Makai," by Kathleen Tyau. Time to send your comments and your questions to be forwarded to Tyau!
