Kailua board to lose two members

Faith Evans, chairwoman of the Kailua Neighborhood Board, and longtime board member George Gonsalves Jr. are expected to announce their resignations at a board meeting at 7 tonight in the Kailua District Park Multipurpose Room.

Evans is serving her sixth term as chairwoman and has been on the board for seven years. She is leaving for health reasons. Gonsalves has served on the board since 1991, including as vice chairman. He is leaving to spend more time with his family on the Mainland and to help care for his aging mother, also on the Mainland.

The board is expected to discuss Keolu Skateboard Park, concessions at Kailua District Park, Maunawili Old Government Road on Luana Hills Country Club property and maintenance at Kailua parks.

City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle will give a presentation.

Homeless get brief haven

The Waimanalo Hawaiian Homes Association has decided to allow homeless campers displaced by a city renovation project at Waimanalo Beach Park campground to stay at its center across the street.

Approximately 13 campers, including two families, have signed up to be allowed to bring their automobiles and tents for two weeks as long as they adhere to the rules and pay a $10 fee for water and electricity, said campers' spokeswoman Lavina Aina. "One mistake, whatevers, and they out," said Aina, who was elected to speak for the campers and will enforce the rules, which prohibit drinking, drug use, fighting and visitors after 9 p.m.

The move will allow the campers time to process paperwork to obtain homeless shelter accommodations.

The city closed the campground for 90 days, at the request of the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board, for renovation and to allow the community to reclaim the area.
