UH-BYU trivia that stand test of time

By Ferd Lewis

Maybe you grew up seeing red every time BYU blue took the field against Hawai'i.

Perhaps you've been a longtime fan of the Cougars and their quarterback factory.

Or, maybe you've just enjoyed the thrills and memorable moments that the 26 previous games have brought.

If so, step right up and test your UH-BYU series IQ before tomorrow's showdown on ESPN. Grab a pencil and assess your knowledge of Hawai'i's favorite sports series by identifying these figures from history:

  1. I remain the only UH head coach ever to beat BYU in back-to-back games.
  2. I was so frustrated by those consecutive losses that I vowed if UH beat us a third straight time, I'd leap off Mt. Timpanogos in 1991.
  3. Tim Chang hosted me on my recruiting visit to UH two years ago and did such a good job that I'll try to pick off some of his passes.
  4. Born and raised in Hawai'i, I knew where in Chinatown to take Jim McMahon for acupuncture when his arm was sore before our 1980 game — the one in which he threw a then-NCAA record 60 passes.
  5. They named a gym on the UH campus after me, but it wasn't because I won the first game in this series in 1930.
  6. I won the Heisman Trophy but the game we played that night at Aloha Stadium wasn't anything to celebrate.
  7. When UH fans recall the ones that got away against BYU, my name inevitably comes up.
  8. I'm in the College Football Hall of Fame as a quarterback but anybody who was at our game in 1980 will tell you my left-footed punt to the 1-yard line was the biggest play.
  9. Until I took over the UH offense, Hawai'i had gone 13 consecutive quarters without an offensive touchdown against the Cougars. With my offense, we averaged 35 points against them.
  10. One year the game got so intense that I started coaching the linebackers from the sidelines — and I was the athletic director.

Get 9-10 correct and you're da fan! Manage 6-8 and you've been around. Anything less than 5, you'll have to turn in your ti leaves.
