Cayetano takes Anderson to task

By Lynda Arakawa

Gov. Ben Cayetano yesterday targeted another gubernatorial candidate, saying Democrat D.G. "Andy" Anderson's claims that the state is bankrupt shows Anderson is uninformed about the state's finances and out of touch with what is happening nationwide.

"Hawai'i has received much acclaim for managing so well in a tough economic environment, particularly given our tourist-based economy," Cayetano said. "While 16 states are raising taxes, Hawai'i is the only state in the entire nation to cut taxes since Sept. 11. Just last month, Moody's Investor Service raised Hawai'i's Aa3 general obligation rating to reflect a stable outlook as a result of state government's 'fiscal discipline and strong budgetary management.'"

Cayetano's criticism of Anderson's follows the governor's review of plans detailed by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed Case and Republican candidate Linda Lingle.

Anderson, a businessman and former state legislator, has said repeatedly that the state is bankrupt.

"The fact is Hawai'i state government continues to be fiscally sound," Cayetano said. "People understand that times have been tough for everyone in our country. I think our people are much more in touch with what is happening than some politicians give them credit for."

Anderson, who said Cayetano is overly sensitive of his administration, maintained that the state is "very much on the edge (of) bankruptcy."

"If he would prefer, I will say this state is in dire financial straits," Anderson said. "And to me they are almost the same. I have spent some 22 years looking at, and dealing with, our government's budgets, both at the state and county levels. I can read and understand the document.

"I recall the administration and the Legislature robbing every single piggy-bank special fund we had. I remember the debate about utilizing the Hurricane (Relief) Fund and ultimately using the interest of this fund to just balance the budget last year."
