Iolani upsets California's Edison

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Iolani scored one of the biggest upsets in Hawai'i high school football history last night, stunning Southern California power Edison, 34-20, at Aloha Stadium.

Iolani's Raynold Stowers runs past Edison's Bubba Reynolds to score the Raiders' first touchdown in the first quarter. Iolani beat Edison, of Huntington Beach, Calif., 34-20, at Aloha Stadium.

Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

Edison, of Huntington Beach, was the runner-up last year in the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section Division I, the most competitive in California. The Chargers are ranked No. 13 in the state by CalHi Sports magazine.

Iolani (2-0), ranked No. 6 in The Honolulu Advertiser top 10 poll, scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns and rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit. Junior running back Raynold Stowers' 26-yard touchdown run helped tie the game at 20-20 with 7:47 remaining, and Shawn Agustin returned an interception 45 yards for another touchdown 44 seconds later to help give the Raiders a 27-20 lead.

Stowers sealed the game with a 46-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left.

Stowers, held to 27 yards on 14 carries in the first half, finished with 129 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. He also scored on a 7-yard reception.

Edison quarterback Tommy Grady, who has committed to Oklahoma and is regarded as one of the nation's top players, completed just 9 of 26 passes in the second half for 100 yards. He finished 23 of 50 for 247 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions. Grady threw 33 touchdowns with only three interceptions in 13 games last year.

Iolani quarterback Robert Mageo completed 11 of 20 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. He was not intercepted.

Edison's only loss in last year's 11-1-1 season was to Long Beach Poly, now ranked No. 4 in the nation by USA Today.
