SURFING
Garcia advances: Wai'anae's Sunny Garcia won a tiebreaker with Brazil's Victor Ribas to advance to the third round of the $286,000 Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tournament at San Clemente, Calif., yesterday.
Garcia, the 2000 world champion, and Ribas finished tied with 15.5 scores, when judges gave Garcia an 8.65 score on his final wave. That final score was also the best single wave score, allowing Garcia to advance.
"If I had lost, I would have been in tears," Garcia said. "I can't afford to be losing any heats. I've had three bad events already this year, and I want to still be in world title contention going into Hawai'i, especially with Pipe(line Masters) and Sunset (Rip Curl Pro) counting this year."
Kaua'i's Bruce Irons lost to Mark Occhilupo of Australia, 14.1-12.4, and Kalani Robb, of O'ahu's North Shore, lost to Brazil's Guilherme Herdy, 16.75-13.6.
In tomorrow's third round Garcia faces Brazil's Fabio Gouveia. ASP ratings leader Andy Irons of Kaua'i faces Shane Beschen of California, and Kailua, Kona's Shane Dorian surfs against Damien Hobgood of Florida.
