Lifeguards pull 24 to safety
Windward lifeguards reported a busy day yesterday with 24 rescues.
There were eight people pulled out of the water at Hanauma Bay, six at Sandy Beach, two at Makapu'u, seven at Waimanalo and one at Kailua.
Lifeguards said windward surf came up to about 5 feet with a southeastern swell and it evidently was too much for many swimmers to handle.
Acting Lt. Ron Bregam said the most dramatic rescue that he saw involved two 12-year-old boys at Sandy Beach at 3:45 p.m.
A wave knocked the two boys down and swept them out to deep water. Two lifeguards went out and got them.
"They would have been out to sea" had it not been for the lifeguards' rapid response, Bregam said.

Makakilo woman hit by car, dies
A 61-year-old woman was killed yesterday morning on Makakilo Drive when she was struck by a car driven by a Marine police officer.
The unidentified woman, from the Makakilo/Kapolei area, was not in a crosswalk as she tried to cross where the road curves, Honolulu police said. The accident occurred a little northwest of Palailai Street around 6:40 a.m.
The 20-year-old driver was in a blue 1978 Chevrolet Camaro. He is a member of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, assigned to Camp Smith as a military police officer, the Marines said yesterday.
Speed and alcohol were not factors, police said.
The death is the 45th traffic fatality this year in Honolulu, compared with 56 at the same time last year.
