Use '911 Day' to honor domestic heroes

One of the more stirring things to happen in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks last year was America's rediscovery of its "heroes" — the police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and others who are always on the front lines when disaster strikes.

Their courage and sacrifice in the chaos after the attacks reinforced the importance of the men and women whose job it is to serve and protect.

As the anniversary of Sept. 11 approaches, we will see renewed gestures of gratitude for these folks. There will be ceremonies, speeches of appreciation and other events.

But why leave it at that? After all, this nation has set aside special days to annually honor veterans, working men and women, national heroes and presidents, and even mothers and fathers.

Why not set aside a day to perpetually honor those who are willing to take on the responsibility of responding to our cries for help? And what better day than Sept. 11?

After all, when we need the services of the police, fire department or other emergency personnel, what number do we call? Yes, we dial 911.

Officially, President Bush has declared 9/11 Patriot Day, and that's a fine name. But why not also treat Sept. 11 as a special "911 Day," a day when the nation stops for a moment to honor its domestic heroes?
