Lanai, Augie T. meet unshaven 007 on Kaua'i

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

STAR WATCH: When Lanai and Augie T., the morning drive duo on KDNN Island Rhythm 98.5 FM, were on Kaua'i to stage a "Jan Ken Po" contest at the county fair (the winner will appear in a Honolulu taping), they ran into holidaying Pierce Brosnan and wife Keely Shaye Smith at the Kaua'i Marriott. "He was here on vacation and looked like he hadn't shaved for a while," said Lanai. "He didn't look like James Bond." Augie was a little dazed, calling him Roger Moore at first. And yes, they took pictures with Brosnan, whose "Die Another Day" (the 20th 007 film) arrives in November. ...

David Hasselhoff, in town for the filming of "Baywatch Hawaiian Wedding," a Fox TV reunion movie now shooting on the North Shore, has been working out at Gold's Gym in Kaka'ako, with personal trainer Mike Sapp. Sapp is no stranger to celeb workouts, having had a hand in shaping and grooming such actors as Kate Beckinsale for "Pearl Harbor"; he was Arnold Schwarzenegger's training partner when the muscleman-turned-actor prepared for his breakthrough film, "Conan the Barbarian." ...

And you never know who's listening to you on morning drive radio, as KCCN FM 100's trio of Charly Espina, Billy Van Osdol and Jason "Pipi" Rezentes discovered last week while talking about Hasselhoff and "Baywatch" resuming film work here. "He was listening while at the Turtle Bay," said Espina. "And he called to invite our crew to do a live broadcast from the 'Baywatch' shoot." So plans are under way to try to make it all work — soon. ...

PERSONALITIES: Frank DeLima, the weekend attraction at the Ohana Reef Towers' Palace Showroom, seemed to be everywhere one recent Saturday. He's on TV, of course, playing the robed Lum Jong character on "Mahjong Party," hosted by Brickwood Galuteria on KHON-Fox 2, but he also was in a Kalakaua Avenue parade; decked out as a Chinese Elvis Presley impersonator, he performed during the halftime show with the University of Hawai'i band at the football game at Aloha Stadium; and managed to make his Palace performances, too. All in a day's work. ...

Zenia Zambrano, in the title role of Manoa Valley Theatre's "A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline," is a gotta see, gotta hear, gotta cheer trouper. Remarkable presence, resourceful voice, revealing portrait of a star of country music. While the play is formulaic, even somewhat static, Zambrano radiates and rules and makes every one of her moments memorable. ...

'Ukulele master Herb "Ohta-san" Ohta and Japanese producer-trumpeter Hiro Kawashima checked out Rolando Sanchez & Salsa Hawaii a few nights back at Brew Moon. ...

Singer-guitarist Wayne Takamine opens Monday at the Waikiki Broiler, where he'll perform from 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. ...

RANDOM NOTES: Emme Tomimbang's 9/11 special, "Emme's Island Moments: Hawai'i to New York: The Aloha Spirit Lives," will be retelevised at 10:30 p.m. tomorrow on KGMB-9. It was a last-minute decision to give the show a third airing — in the usual David Letterman slot — so TV programming grids may not reflect this. ...
