Abused toddler in critical condition

A 22-month-old boy from Kapa'a, Kaua'i was listed in critical condition yesterday morning at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children, suffering from injuries that indicate he was abused, police said.

The boy has abdominal-area injuries caused by blunt trauma, according to police. He was transported to O'ahu Friday and Kapi'olani Medical Center officials notified Child Protective Services and Honolulu police of his injuries.

The Kaua'i Police Department's Youth Services Section has opened a child-abuse investigation.

Search continues for swimmer

Ernest Lau was last seen Sunday.
Fire crews plan to continue their search today in waters off Ala Moana Beach Park for a swimmer missing since Sunday.

Ernest Lau, 38, was reported missing at 5 p.m. Sunday. He was last seen wearing blue shorts.

Lau is a recreational swimmer who visits the area two or three times a week, fire officials said.

"The visibility in the water was very poor for our divers," Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said of yesterday's search effort.

Lau is 5-foot-9, weighs 160 pounds and has black hair and black eyes.

His family reported him missing at 5 p.m. Sunday and fire crews were notified at 8:49 p.m.

A family member made a check of the park and found his car. Police then found Lau's beach chair, car keys, and cell phone on the beach.
