Kayaker found on North Kohala shore

Big Island firefighters today found a 54-year-old man who was reported missing yesterday on the shore at Pu'ukea Bay near the Mahukona Boat Ramp in North Kohala.

The man was taken by Coast Guard helicopter to North Hawai'i Community Hospital. His kayak was recovered about three miles offshore. Firefighters found at him about 7:15 a.m. today.

Kailua cats shot with pellet gun

Someone is shooting cats with a pellet gun on Kaipi'i Street in Kailua.

Two residents recently found their cats wounded. One cat was shot in the chest, the other on its left side. The pellets are still imbedded in the cats but the pets are recovering.

Cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor offense. Anyone with information, is asked to call Hawaiian Humane Society investigator Darrell Bueno at 946-2187, extension 360, or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Hawai'i Kai brush fire contained

Two companies from Hawai'i Kai, assisted by engines from the Palolo and McCully stations, were involved in fighting a brush fire overnight in Hawai'i Kai near the intersection of Kalaniana'ole Highway at Kealahou Street.

Firefighters reported the fire contained at 8 a.m., about eight hours after responding.

Injured infant from Kaua'i still critical

A 22-month-old Kaua'i boy remained in critical condition today at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children with abdominal injuries caused by blunt trauma, police said.

Two Kaua'i detectives have been sent to O'ahu to collect information on the case.

The child was flown to O'ahu last Friday.

Police seek man for questioning

The Honolulu Police Department's Missing Person Detail is asking for the public's help in finding a 70-year-old man wanted for questioning in a felony sexual assault investigation.

Lon Polk was last seen at 9 a.m. Friday, when he left his University residence. He called a friend on Saturday but has not been heard from since.

Polk is described as 5 feet 11, weighing 165 pounds with a medium build. He has gray hair, hazel eyes and a mustache and beard.

Suspect in auto thefts arrested

Fugitive Gaylord Mook, wanted by police on a probation revocation warrant, was arrested Monday in Kailua. Mook, 26, is being questioned about a series of auto thefts in the Kailua area, police said. Mook was the subject of a CrimeStoppers alert.

Blaze damages Waikiki house

Fire last night caused $20,000 damage to an abandoned house at 432 Kalaimoku Street in Waikiki, known to police as a hangout for homeless people and drug users.

Investigators said the fire was deliberately set.
