A week after the attacks, San Francisco-based filmmakers Jay Rosenblatt and Caveh Zahedi asked 150 independent filmmakers to create short films or videos related to the events. Thirteen of these works are included in "Underground Zero," a feature-length video that explores the significance of Sept. 11 through a variety of creative, personal and cultural lenses.
Soon after the attacks on the World Trade Center, New York's Third World Newsreel, an alternative media center, also put out a call to filmmakers to help document reactions and concerns from minority communities. The series debuted at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of its Documentary Fortnight. Two short films, including one from Hawai'i, are presented from Third World Newsreel's Media Call to Action.
Also included is the seven-minute "Site," by Jason Kliot, who grabbed his digital camera and captured the faces of those who were at the Twin Towers site, observing. Phone 532-8768.
Teens actively unite
"Higher Faster Stronger," the teen eco-adventure TV show, kicks off its third season with a series of events for teens at Ala Moana Centerstage. From 6:30 to 7:30 tonight, the program focuses on a remembrance of the events of last Sept. 11.
Psychologist Don Kopf provides words of support for teens, and Billboard Top 10 recording artist and Moloka'i High School senior Darrell Labrado performs an a cappella rendition of the national anthem. Labrado will also perform a miniconcert during the event.
At last, the ali'i gowns
In celebration of the Aloha Festivals, Kahala Mall will provide an opportunity for the public to view the "200 Years of Hawai'i" Monarchy Gown and Holoku Collection at 2 p.m. Sunday. This will be the first public appearance of the ali'i gowns in eight years.
This up-close look into Hawai'i's heritage includes eight of the more than 20 gowns in the collection displayed by live models, with narration featuring excerpts from royal memoirs, performances by the King's Guard and song from soloist Mandy Ululani Thronas-Brown, performing "Ku'u Pua 'O Paoakalani."
Sept. 11 angel for all
Tables will be set up outside eight stores (all but Kailua-Kona) with the necessary supplies. Participants will pay $2, all of which will be donated to the Red Cross.
