Injured infant from Kaua'i still critical

A 22-month-old Kaua'i boy remained in critical condition yesterday at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children with abdominal injuries caused by blunt trauma, police said. Child Protective Services and police in Honolulu and Kaua'i are monitoring the case. There have been no arrests as yet.


Body believed to be missing swimmer

A body found floating early yesterday off Ala Moana Beach Park is believed to be that of a 38-year-old swimmer reported missing since Sunday.

Ernest Lau was reported missing at 5 p.m. Sunday. A family member that day checked the park where he regularly swims and found his car. Police later found Lau's beach chair, car keys, and cell phone on the beach.

Fire Capt. Richard Soo said two women at about 6 a.m. yesterday saw the body floating a few yards from the shoreline in about 2 feet of water at the beach near McCoy Pavilion.

A city lifeguard retrieved the body and the man was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m., Soo said. The city Medical Examiner's office has yet to release the man's identity or possible cause of death.


Police seek man for questioning

Lon Polk was last seen Friday morning.
The Honolulu Police Department's Missing Person Detail is asking for the public's help in locating a 70-year-old man wanted for questioning in a felony sexual assault investigation.

Lon Polk was last seen at 9 a.m. Friday, when he left his University residence. He called a friend on Saturday but has not been heard from since.

Polk is described as 5 feet 11, weighing 165 pounds with a medium build. He has gray hair, hazel eyes and a mustache and beard.

Big Island police seek five in beating

Big Island police are asking the public's help in finding five men who attacked two male tourists in early July.

Police said the victims were attacked July 9, in front of Anthony's nightclub and restaurant at the Highland Shopping Center in Waikoloa, South Kohala. The two had just left the club at its 2 a.m. closing when they were attacked by five assailants, described only as men with very short hair.

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of any of the suspects is asked to call officer Thomas E. Fratinardo of the South Kohala Patrol at 887-3080 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.


Blaze destroys two-story house

A small two-story dwelling in the Leilani Estates subdivision in Pahoa burned to the ground yesterday morning, Big Island fire officials said.

Three county firefighting units responded to the 9:44 a.m. blaze at the property, which doesn't have water service or electricity, according to Fire Capt. Rodney Tampon. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Tampon said.


Child playing with lighter started fire

A child playing with a lighter started a fire Monday that gutted a Big Island home at 92-1439 Kona Drive, fire officials said. Damage to the Hawai'i Ocean View Estates home was estimated at $90,000.
