Wilder project gets exemption

A controversial affordable housing development in Makiki is moving forward after the City Council Zoning Committee approved a resolution yesterday exempting the project from certain requirements, such as a required private park area.

The Punahou Vista Apartments, an eight-story, 55-unit building, will be built at 1566 Wilder Ave., on a site owned by the YWCA. Residents in the area have raised concerns over adding more traffic to the already congested Wilder and Punahou Street intersection, but project consultant Keith Kurahashi said all traffic concerns have been addressed.

The building will have one parking space for each apartment and five additional guest spaces. No left turns will be allowed in or out of the driveway.

The full council will vote on the resolution at its Sept. 25 meeting.

McCully crime to be discussed

A town meeting to discuss crime prevention in the McCully area will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in the Lunalilo Elementary School cafeteria.

Rep. Scott Saiki D-20th (Kapahulu, Mo'ili'ili) is sponsoring the meeting after receiving many calls from residents about crime in the area.
