Advertiser Staff

Teenager Ashley Harkleroad continued to make strides in her ever-improving game, defeating fellow American Jennifer Hopkins, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to the second round of the $140,00 Big Island Championships at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Harkleroad, 17, served out the first set after breaking Hopkins at 4-4, then rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win the 1-hour, 38-minute match.

"It was a tough match today because we're friends and she's a really good player," Harkleroad said. "Luckily, I played smart and just tried to run everything down and do my best to put pressure on her."

Harkleroad has been tabbed among a new batch of rising stars on the Sanex WTA Tour circuit, and will get an opportunity to enhance her credentials when she plays No. 2 seed Lisa Raymond in the second round.
