Family appeals for patience as Mink fights illness
By Mike Gordon

"The family has been advised to be patient while Mrs. Mink fights the pneumonia," according to the statement. "The family asks the public to be patient, as well."
The family has asked the hospital to withhold information on Mink's condition. She has viral pneumonia brought on by a case of adult chicken pox.
The statement by Mink's family, issued through her Honolulu office, described the congresswoman as being "very sick."
"The Mink family reports that Mrs. Mink is receiving excellent care from a first-rate team of physicians, nurses and other intensive care staff," the statement read.
Joan Manke, Mink's chief of staff for her Honolulu office, today said the congresswoman's condition has not changed in several days. She could only describe it as "serious."
"We are looking at the privacy of the family," Manke said. "They've given as much information as they can."
Mink, 74, has been at Straub since Aug. 30 and in the intensive care unit since Sept. 1. Mink is seeking re-election in the 2nd congressional district.
