Second woman held in Waipahu slaying

A 38-year-old woman was arrested yesterday in connection with the Aug. 21 shooting death of Hayward Julio in Waipahu.

The woman was booked on one count of hindering prosecution. Police believe she may have been the driver of a car that fled the scene of the shooting. Details of her arrest were not available.

Julio was shot to death as he sat in his car on Waipi'o Point Access Road just outside Waipahu High School. Police said the shooting followed an argument between Julio and a woman.

Totie Tauala has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Julio's death. Tauala, 28, is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Circuit Court Sept. 19.


Suspect sought in wounding cats

Someone is shooting cats with a pellet gun on Kaipi'i Street in Kailua.

Two residents recently found their cats wounded. The pellets are still imbedded in the cats, but the pets are recovering.

Cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor offense. Anyone with information is asked to call Hawaiian Humane Society investigator Darrell Bueno at 946-2187, extension 360, or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.


Firefighters battle Hawai'i Kai blaze

Firefighters battled an overnight brush fire in Hawai'i Kai yesterday that took eight hours to contain.

Two companies from Hawai'i Kai, assisted by engines from the Palolo and McCully stations, fought the brushfire in Hawai'i Kai near Kalaniana'ole Highway and Kealahou Street. Firefighters reported the fire contained at 8 a.m., about eight hours after responding.


Police arrest fugitive in Kailua

Fugitive Gaylord Mook, wanted by Honolulu police on a probation revocation warrant, was arrested Monday in Kailua.

Mook, 26, is being questioned about auto thefts in the Kailua area, police said. Mook was the subject of a CrimeStoppers alert.


Police search for Big Island escapee

Gary Castro escaped from a Hilo prison on Tuesday.
Big Island police are asking the public's help in finding a 38-year-old inmate who escaped Tuesday from the Kulani Correctional Facility in South Hilo.

Gary R. Castro was reported missing after guards noticed he was absent after a 9:45 p.m. inmate headcount.

Castro is described as 5 feet 4, weighing about 150 pounds with a medium build and having black hair and brown eyes. He was reportedly last seen wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call the police non-emergency number at 935-3311. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.


Tourist drowns at Kaua'i resort

A 48-year-old female tourist drowned Tuesday in the swimming pool of the Radisson Kaua'i Beach Resort.

Kaua'i police said the woman's body was found in the pool about 10:35 a.m. and an autopsy determined she drowned. The victim's name has not been released until relatives are notified, officials said.


Missing man found in North Kohala

Big Island firefighters yesterday found a 56-year-old man, reported missing since Tuesday, on shore at Pu'ukea Bay near the Mahukona Boat ramp in North Kohala.

A Coast Guard helicopter found Ronald Walker at 7:22 a.m. about three miles north of Mahukona Harbor. Walker was reported missing by his wife at 8:39 p.m. Tuesday after he failed to return from a snorkeling trip.

Walker was found under a tree and on the rocks with his kayak. He was unconscious and unresponsive with possible broken bones.

He was transported to North Hawai'i Community Hospital, where yesterday he was conscious with improving vital signs, according to the Coast Guard.
