Hayashi will defend match play title today

Defending champion Kevin Hayashi will play 1997 champion Ron Castillo Jr. in today's Aloha Section PGA/Spalding Match Play Championship at Leilehua Golf Course.

In yesterday's semifinals, Pearl Country Club head pro Hayashi defeated Ko Olina's Paul Ito, 6 and 5, and Castillo, head pro at Hapuna, outlasted Pearl's Kevin Carll, 1-up.

In the Seniors semifinals, Kiahuna's Ron Kia'aina beat Steven Hookano, from Mauna Lani's Francis H. I'i Brown course, 7 and 6, while Hilo Muni's Rodney Acia edged Maui Golf Shop's Clif Council, 1-up.

Acia was runner-up to Larry Stubblefield in last year's inaugural Senior Championship.

There were two holes-in-one Tuesday. Maui Country Club's Brad Bowen aced the fifth hole (221 yards) with a 3-iron. Ron Castillo Sr. (Golf Action Academy) aced the second hole (161 yards) with a 5-iron.

Today's 36-hole finals begin at 7 a.m.

• Tomori, Hoshino make cut: Hilo's Christel Tomori (75-151) and Camie Hoshino (78-152) made the cut at the LPGA's second Sectional Qualifying Tournament.

Tomori is 45th going into today's third round at Landmark Golf Club, in Indio, Calif. Hoshino is 58th. Paula Marti of Spain leads at 68-137.

Hawai'i's Summerset Lovett (84-165) and former Honolulu resident Sally Soranaka (81-156) missed the cut. That came at 9-over 153, with 76 players advancing.

The top 30 finishers advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Oct. 8-11, at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

• Lee 11 back: Hawai'i's Regan Lee remained tied for 34th after three rounds of The Gateway Tour's Iomega Classic, which ends today at McCormick Ranch and Arizona State's Karsten Golf Courses, near Phoenix.

Lee shot 1-over-par 73 yesterday and is at 1-under 215 for the event. David Howser (68-204) leads.

• Kim qualifies: Wahiawa's Bev Kim won the sectional qualifying for the 2002 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Championship Tuesday at Oahu Country Club.

With entrants playing hilly OCC at 5,800 yards i the U.S. Golf Association minimum for its championships i Kim shot 80. OCC usually plays at 5,420 yards, and is par 73 for the women. OCC plays 6,005 yards from the back tees.

Kim will play in the 41st USGA Senior Women's Amateur, Oct. 5-10 at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club at Southern Pines, N.C. Lily Yao is the first alternate, replacing runner-up Mona Lee, who could not make the trip.
