Hickam Invitational back after 2 years off

Advertiser Staff

The Hickam Air Force Base Invitational returns tomorrow after a two-year absence. The tournament was not held in 2000 because of construction at the Mamala Bay Course. Last year, it was canceled because of 9/11.

Former state high school champion Van Wright won the last Invitational, in 1999, beating Regan Lee by four shots. Both have since turned pro.

Mark West, who won the Barbers Point Invitational on Labor Day, is in this year's field. Others in championship flight include Clayton Gomi, Brandan Kop, Joe Phengsavath, Randy Shibuya, Blaine Kimura and 12-year-old Michelle Wie. Phil Chambers and Jon Mathias, who work at Hickam's pro shop, are also playing.

The Senior Flight includes Wendell Kop, Mike Foster, Dick Sieradzki, William Villareal, Robert Rabago and George Yamamoto.

The championship and A flights go out from 6:42 a.m. for the first round, with the B flight, seniors and super seniors starting at 11:15 a.m. The field will be cut Saturday and the leaders go out last on Sunday, at approximately 8:20 a.m.

OCC Senior Invitational set

The inaugural Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational will be Monday and Tuesday. The tournament, which used to be held in conjunction with the OCC Invitational, has a field of 80 players.

There are senior (55-64 years old) and super senior (65-older) divisions. The low 36-hole gross score is the champion.

George Yamamoto won the last two OCC senior titles. Others playing include former Manoa Cup champions Art Fujita (1964) and Dick Sieradzki (1990), and David Ishikawa, Wendell Kop, Mervin Matsumoto, Mike Foster and Bob Amonn.

Play begins at 7 each morning off the first and 10th tees.
