No. 3 seed beaten in Big Island tennis

Advertiser Staff

American Samantha Reeves withstood 90-degree weather and two match points to beat No. 3 seed Barbara Schett, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4, yesterday and advance to the quarterfinals of the Big Island Championships at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

"Anytime you can reach the quarterfinals it's great, so I'm really happy," Reeves said after the 2-hour, 19-minute match.

It didn't look so great for the Monona, Wisc., resident when she found herself down a set and 0-2 to the Austrian Schett.

Reeves rallied to go up 4-2, only to see Schett stage her own rally to take the lead.

Serving at 5-6, Reeves fought off two match points, forced a tiebreak and won the set. Then, she surged to a 5-2 lead in the third set and held off another Schett rally.

"Once I won the second set, I thought to myself how awful it would be to put forth all that effort and lose," Reeves said. "So I just kept going for all my shots and I kept telling myself if you go for it you have no regrets. That's what I did and it turned out my way."

The win put the 74th-ranked Reeves close to her first WTA Tour semifinal.

In another upset yesterday, Belgian Els Callens ousted No. 6 seed Marissa Irvin, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Competition continues today, featuring former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez.

BASKETBALL

• Wallace's condition upgraded: University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Riley Wallace was upgraded to good condition yesterday at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas.

He is expected to be released from the hospital either today or tomorrow, and return to Hawai'i Sunday.

"The doctors will perform a CT scan (today) to make sure there is no further bleeding in his brain," hospital spokesman Rick Plummer said. "We have upgraded him to good condition but want to keep him here longer to monitor his progress."

A tube that drained excess fluid from Wallace's skull was removed yesterday.

Wallace, 60, underwent a two-hour brain surgery last Friday to remove two subdural hematomas. A hematoma is a swelling filled with blood.

Wallace was in Las Vegas to meet with hotel mogul Bill Boyd, a UH booster.
