Honolulu Symphony's 2002-'03 Halekulani MasterWorks season

 •  Violinist launches new classical season at the symphony
Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, a pre-eminent violinist, is to perform with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra Oct. 4 and 6.
Today and Sunday — "Brahms' First Symphony and the Bach Double." Featuring a performance of the Bach Double Violin Concerto, with American violinist Hilary Hahn and Honolulu Symphony concertmaster Ignace Jang also on violin. Samuel Wong conducts.

Sept. 20, 22 — "Peer Gynt — Complete and Narrated." The Honolulu premiere of Edvard Grieg's musical adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's dramatic classic. With guest narrator Michael Titterton, and the Honolulu Symphony Chorus directed by Karen Kennedy. Wong conducts.

Oct. 4, 6 — Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. The return of one of the world's top violinists, performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, opus 64; also featuring Franck's Symphony in D Minor. With guest conductor Derick Inouye.

Oct. 11, 13 — "Mostly Mozart." Featuring oboist Scott Janusch in Mozart's Oboe Concerto in C Major, plus Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique." Harvey Felder conducts.

Oct. 25, 27 — "Mozart's Nine to Mahler's Fifth Symphony." Pianist Norman Krieger performs Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271, "Jeunehomme," and the orchestra plays Mahler's Symphony No. 5. Wong conducts.

Nov. 1, 3 — "Cinematic MasterWorks." A Hawai'i International Film Festival alliance, featuring the world premiere of a symphonic presentation of Elizabeth Lindsey Buyers' "And Then There Were None" documentary, with narration accompanying the film. Jeffrey Biegel is guest pianist; Wong conducts.

Nov. 8, 10 — "Kenny Endo Returns." Taiko master Kenny Endo joins the orchestra in a synthesis of traditional drumming techniques, Western jazz percussion styles and symphonic orchestra. Wong conducts.

Nov. 22, 24 — Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." Antonio Vivaldi's classic will be featured with Schumann's Symphony No. 2, opus 61, with guest violinist Adele Anthony. JoAnn Falletta conducts.

Jan. 3, 5 — Cellist Han-Na Chang. The symphony celebrates 100 years of Korean immigration to Hawai'i with a program featuring traditional Korean folk instruments and guest artist Han-Na Chang, the South Korean cellist. Guests to be announced. Wong conducts.

March 21, 23 — Mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade performs arias and highlights from beloved operas. Wong conducts.

March 28, 30 — "Iggy Shines, Local Style." Symphony concertmaster Ignace "Iggy" Jang performs Don Womack's Violin Concerto (Womack is a University of Hawai'i composer and teacher). Wong conducts.

April 4, 6 — "A Narrated Midsummer Night's Dream." Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream, opus 21 and 61" features a narrator and the Honolulu Symphony Chorus. Soloists to be announced. Wong conducts.

May 9, 11 — "Tan Dun — Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Grammy nominee Tan Dun conducts his work, including original music from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." With video projections.

May 16, 18 — "Dances Around the World." Music and dance from around the world, including Hawai'i, featuring tap dancer Charles Teo from China and hula to Ravel's "La Valse" by Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa'ahila," with kumu hula Maelia Carter. Wong conducts.
