Screen gems on the shorter side

The annual 'Ohina Short Film Showcase, spotlighting the work of local indie filmmakers, will be held at the Doris Duke at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, times to be announced. 'Ohina means "the gathering" or "coming together," thus allowing filmmakers to connect with audiences. Last year, 16 short films were shown. The showcase hits the theater screen Oct. 18-19. 951-4413.

FESTIVAL: Sept. 21-22

Inspired by the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, Calif., the nation's garlic capital, the Hawai'i Garlic Festival and Home Grown Products show will similarly offer the taste and whiffs of the beloved bulb — and then some — at the Waikiki Shell.

The event, presented by the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, will be a cornucopia of festivities, tapping not only garlic cookery and competitions and wrestling bouts, below, but a produce sale, extreme games and matches, skateboarding, keiki activities, wine tasting, and magic and other shows.

Three stages of continuous island music will feature such acts as O Shen, the Opihi Pickers, Vaihi, Chief Ragga, Reign, Believe, Koa'uka, Tino & the Rhythm Klub, Jennifer Perri, Forte, Son Caribe, Centre Stage, Sonya Mendez, Epic Session, Cory Oliveros. Admission: $5, free for keiki 12 and under and seniors 65 or older.

CONCERT: Sept. 21

Get ready to rock your nostalgia off as Hale'iwa hosts "Rock Fest," featuring Atomic Punks, an early Van Halen tribute band; the Aerosmith tribute band ROCKS; the Rush tribute band Moving Pictures; and special guests SLUG and Southbound.

It's an all-ages show at the North Shore Marketplace Entertainment Field. Tickets go on sale today: $20 general, $17.50 advance, available at Tower Records, military ticket outlets, BBC Store and Surf & Sea in Hale'iwa, Hungry Ear Kailua, Outburst Sound in Wahiawa and Rainbow Books and Records.

CONCERT: Sept. 25

That grand organ at the Hawai'i Theatre will get a grand workout when the Hawai'i Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presents "Hawai'i Organ Pops," at 7 p.m. While John McCreary and Keith Thompson take turns on the pipe organ, a star-studded roster will add pipes of the vocal kind: Guy Merola, Larry Paxton, Loretta Ables-Sayre, Georgine Stark, Ella Edwards, Cheryl Bartlett, Daryl StarkÊand others are expected to join in. Tickets: $3-$10, at the box office.

STAGE: Sept. 27-Oct. 13

"Chicago," the Bob Fosse musical about two Roaring Twenties murderesses (Roxie Hart, played by Tricia Marciel, and Velma Kelly, enacted by Katie Leiva), has a sizzling score by John Kander, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango," "When You're Good to Mama," "Mr. Cellophane," "Razzle Dazzle" and "Class" — each a virtual show-stopper. Andrew Sakaguchi directs and choreographs. Curtain: 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, 4 p.m. Fridays. Tickets: $10-$40.

DANCE CONCERT: Sept. 27

"At the Hop," the ultimate oldies rock dance concert, will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena, and it's a certified stroll down memory lane. Making their island debuts: Danny and the Juniors, featuring Joe Terry (Danny is deceased), left, the group that clicked with "At the Hop," "Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay" and "Twisting USA"; and Bill Haley's Comets, featuring Al Rappa (Haley is deceased), known for "Rock Around the Clock," "Shake, Rattle and Roll," "Burn That Candle," "See Ya Later, Alligator," "Razzle Dazzle" and "Skinny Minnie."

There are two returning bands: The Coasters, whose hits included "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," "Little Egypt," "Poison Ivy," "Searchin,'" "Smokey Joe's Cafe"; and The Drifters, whose signatures include "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Up on the Roof," "On Broadway" and "Under the Boardwalk." Tickets: $25 for upper level seats, $35 for dance level and loge seating.

CONCERT: Sept. 27-29

Crooner Lou Rawls, right, brings his bold, bluesy presence to Blaisdell Concert Hall as the first guest-star in the Honolulu Symphony's 2002-2003 Pops Series. Pops conductor Matt Catingub conducts the orchestra as Rawls unravels his biggie, "You'll Never Find (Another Love Like Mine)." Tickets: $15-$57.

CONCERT: Oct. 4-5

Nancy Sinatra brings her boots and song bag to two shows at Gussie L'Amour's, 3251 N. Nimitz Highway. Sinatra is the toots who sang "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" in 1966, and she's had a number of '60s hits, such as "Sugar Town," "So Long Babe," "How Does That Grab You Darlin'?" and — with her dad, Frank Sinatra — "Something Stupid." Her latest CD is "California Girl." Tickets: $35 general, $30 advance.

DANCE: Oct. 4-5

If it's salsa and tango and the fire of Latin dance that you crave, then "Tango Caliente!," an evening of Latin song and dance, is your ticket to enchantment, at the Ronald E. Bright Theatre at Castle High School. The event, a benefit for the Castle Performing Arts Center and the Castle DanceForce, features international performers Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo Merlo from Argentina, who will be joined by Michelle Badion and Evan Wallace of Seattle. They'll be joined by troupers from O'ahu, including salsa dancers George Garcia and Ka'i Roberts from Islatango, ballroom dancers Albert Franz and Ritsuko Fuji Fujii from Tango Hawai'i, and the Castle DanceForce. Tickets: $15 general, $10 for students and seniors.

CONCERT: Oct. 4

A powerful group of women singers and dancers will assemble for "Kamau Pono V: Na Wahine O Ka Mele, Na Wahine O Ka Hula (Women of Song, Women of Dance)" at 7 p.m. at the Hawai'i Theatre.

Produced by Halau Na Wainohia and directed by its kumu hula, singer-dancer Tony Conjugacion, the event looms as one of the fall season's most dynamic gathering of women artists, reflecting a palette of incredible talent. Singers are Teresa Bright, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, 'Iwalani Kahalewai, Auntie Genoa Keawe, Karen Keawehawai'i, Melveen Leed, Marlene Sai, and Taji; dancers include Coline Aiu, Auntie Leilani Alama, Aloha Dalire, Leina'ala Kalama Heine, Ka'aikaula, Healani Youn, and Noenoelani Zuttermeister. Also participating: Halau Na Wainohia and the Pua Melie Trio. Leila Hohu Ki'aha will be musical director. Tickets: $18, at the box office.

"Hello, Broadway," a stage revue assembling melodies from shows such as "Les Miserables," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Cats" and more, will pause at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The good news: The performing cast includes locals Cliffton Hall and Jade Stice. The bad news: There are only two performances, at 2 and 8 p.m. DeeDee Lynn Magno and Welly Young, of New York's Second Generation company, also are prominently featured. Tickets: $24, $38, $48, $58; discounts for seniors and students.

CONCERT: Oct. 10-11

Journey, right, looms as big now as it was two decades ago — a second night has been added to the rockmeisters' Honolulu schedule, by popular demand. In addition to the original Oct. 10 show at Blaisdell Arena, Journey — whose signatures include "Faithfully," "Don't Stop Believing," "Open Arms," "Separate Ways," and "Any Way You Want It" _ now performs at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, too, with a final gig at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Honolulu tickets: $55, $45, at the box office or Ticket Plus outlets.

BUZZING ABOUT ...

Remembrance: The late Moe Keale will be remembered and honored when the Sheraton Waikiki's Music Hall of Fame is launched at 11 a.m. next Thursday at the hotel lobby.

Addition: Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets are $25-$70.

Sold out: "Ho'okipa 2002" is nearly sold out. The Sept. 27 event at the Royal Hawaiian's Monarch Room, a presentation of the culinary program at Kapi'iolani Community College, only has $100 grazing tickets remaining, the result of the big hustle by Betty Wo, Blossom Tyau and Joanna Sullivan.
