Magazine ranks UH campuses low again

Associated Press

University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle said yesterday that inadequate financial support of higher education in the state is reflected in U.S. News & World Report's new rankings of American colleges and universities.

UH-Manoa placed in the third tier — anywhere from 130th to 194th — among 250 institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate majors, along with master's and doctorate degrees.

UH-Hilo placed in the fourth tier — from 162nd to 214th — for liberal arts colleges.

Manoa and Hilo held the same positions last year.

"The University of Hawai'i system has an outstanding faculty dedicated to providing every student with an exceptional education, however, it is no secret that we are significantly underfunded and that makes competing with the top institutions nearly impossible," Dobelle said.

For the third consecutive year, Princeton University topped the magazine's list.

Harvard and Yale tied for second place.
