Nightclub worship

Church by day, nightclub by night?

The newest "planted" church from the Hope Chapel Kane'ohe Bay, Mana'olana, will hold its first service at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Pipeline Cafe.

As radio commercials on rock stations last week pointed out, there's some pluses to using a nightclub for Sunday morning services: "It has a great sound system."

"The music may be a little louder here, the lights a bit dimmer and perhaps a bit smokier, but God is the same," says congregant Leeza Souza.

Mana'olana is a member of the Foursquare, an evangelical Christian denomination.

For details, call 372-4150 or visit www.manaolana.com.

Skills for women

Phyllis Waterhouse of First Baptist Church, Nanakuli, is starting a Christian Women's Job Corps to teach women employment and self-improvement skills.

This will be the first such center in Hawai'i. The church has been serving families throughout the Wai'anae Coast through homeless ministries, "and we decided feeding them is not enough," Waterhouse said.

Open house at the center, which will be at 87-1948 Mohihi St. near the Nanakuli church, will be Jan. 4. Free classes — such as personal discovery, basic finances and budgeting, computer, health and nutrition, personal grooming and job readiness as well as religious education — begin Jan. 13. They are taking applications and enrollment is limited.

"We have a lot of needs," Waterhouse said. "If anyone out there wants to contribute, anything from a coffee pot to a computer, let them know to contact me."

One restriction is that participants must be free of chemical dependency. For more information, contact Waterhouse at 668-1869.

Spiritual visit

Sheikha Amina Teslima al-Jerrahi from Mexico City will take part in a free Zikr ceremony of divine remembrance with the Jerrahi Order of Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at St. Anthony's Retreat Center, 3351 Kalihi St.

Teslima is the spiritual guide to Sufi communities in Mexico City and Honolulu. Sufism is said to be a mystical form of Islam.
