BYU-Hawai'i rolls to easy victory

Ashley Moeai and Chun Yi Lin each had 14 kills as third-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i opened Pacific West Conference with a three-game win over Montana State-Billings last night in La'ie.

Xu Dan had 10 kills for the Seasiders, who won 30-12, 30-16, 30-19 to improve to 10-0 overall.

Kaala Lo had 45 assists for the Seasiders, and also had two aces, raising her season total to 24.

Montana State-Billings fell to 4-6.

The Seasiders will face Western New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in a Pacific West Conference game.

MORE VOLLEYBALL

Hilo wins: Sara Pilgreen had 19 kills and Tiffanie Ollison and Emily Hutchinson added 13 each as the University of Hawai'i-Hilo beat Western New Mexico in four games last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at Hilo.

The Vulcans won 30-28, 30-16, 16-30, 30-23.

U.S. beats Russia: Logan Tom was 3 the last time the U.S. played in the championship of a women's major international volleyball tournament. Yesterday, she made sure the 18-year drought ended.

Tom equaled her current age with a match-high 21 points and Keba Phipps added 20 as the national team continued its incredible run at the 2002 Women's Volleyball World Championships in Berlin. Team USA upset Russia, the world's top-ranked team, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 15-8.

Former University of Hawai'i All-American Heather Bown scored 13 points on nine kills and four blocks as the U.S. won its 11th match in a row and evened its 2002 record at 17-17.

The United States plays Italy, a 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23 winner over China, in the championship tomorrow.

The U.S. out-blocked Russia, 18-10, in the semifinals. For the tournament, the United States holds a commanding 143-68 edge in total blocks over its 10 opponents.

GOLF

Not this time: Hilo's Christel Tomori and Camie Hoshino made the cut but missed qualifying at the LPGA's final sectional yesterday in Indio, Calif.

Tomori closed with a 5-over-par 77 at Landmark Golf Club, and had a four-day total of 304. She tied for 54th. Hoshino (78—310) came in 71st. The top 30, at 298 or better, advanced to the LPGA's Final Qualifying Tournament next month.

Paula Marti was yesterday's medalist, at 71—281. She and Joellyn Erdmann (70—284) were the only players under par.

Sibayan two up: Kaua'i's Shannon Sibayan shot a 69 to take a two-shot lead into today's second round of the Hickam Invitational.

Garret Omuro and Joe Phengsavath are tied for second at 71. Shigeru Kashiwatani and Tommy Kim are tied for fourth, at 73. Michelle Wie, 12, opened with a 75 and is tied for ninth.

All golfers are playing off Mamala Bay's blue tees. The tournament continues today and tomorrow.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

Jones, Miano to speak: University of Hawai'i head football coach June Jones and secondary coach Rich Miano will be featured at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Other guest will be high school football coaches Siuaki Livai of Kahuku and Delbert Tengan of St. Louis. Their teams will be facing off against Long Beach Poly and De La Salle in the HHSAA/First Hawaiian Bank Football Classic on Sept. 21 at the Aloha Stadium.

Lunch begins at 11 a.m. with the program to follow at noon, at the Pagoda Hotel.

SOCCER

UCLA beats San Francisco: Freshman Iris Mora scored a hat trick to lead No. 5 UCLA over the University of San Francisco, 4-1, at the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Hawai'i takes on San Francisco tonight at 7 and UCLA tomorrow at 5 p.m.
