State approves higher Waimanalo Gulch landfill

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Health today approved a permit that will allow the Waimanalo Gulch landfill to continue operating until May 30, 2004.

The permit also allows a vertical expansion to a 430-foot maximum waste height, 30 feet higher that the present operating limit.

The city and county of Honolulu had requested the changes as the landfill neared maximum capacity.

City officials expect that the landfill will be filled to its new height capacity by spring 2003.
