Farrington Highway power cut, lanes closed

Advertiser Staff

Farrington Highway traffic was still snarled at 9 tonight because of three utility poles being down near Nanakuli. Hawaiian Electric Co. has dozens of workers on the scene, but the work was expected to take hours

The westbound lanes of Farrington Highway in Nanakuli have been closed by police after one utility pole was struck by a car about 2:20 p.m., leaving the pole and power lines hanging over traffic and power to much of the coastline cutoff.

Police said the pole, located near Hakimo Road, was termite-eaten and could fall into the road at any time.

The eastbound lanes remain open and westbound lanes are being rerouted around the accident area.

A Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman said power has been cut to about 5,000 customers and crews will repair the pole as quickly as possible.

More details to come.
