UH faculty members cited

The following University of Hawai'i-Manoa faculty were named recipients of the Chancellor's Citation for Meritorious Teaching and the 2002 Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Service to the Community.

Recipients of the Chancellor's Citation are faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching:

  • Michael Cheang, assistant professor, Center on Aging, John A. Burns School of Medicine, who served on the editorial board of the ASA's "Generations" journal and the Honolulu Committee on Aging, and is a highly regarded provider of in-service training for local service providers.
  • Alison Conner, professor in the William S. Richardson School of Law and a key organizer of the proposed graduate Comparative Law Program. She utilizes her international experiences to help students understand the nuances of legal education and judicial functions in Asia.
  • Wayne Iwaoka, associate professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, has introduced innovative teaching styles, and as an academic adviser helps students find, explore and develop their passions, which can be incorporated into their careers.
  • Annette Sherry, associate professor, College of Education's Department of Educational Technology, is the first faculty member to volunteer to teach an online class and became the pioneer of distance learning in her department.
  • Jenny Teruya, assistant professor of accountancy in the College of Business Administration. She helped develop the new accounting information system course and is involved in the school's overall curriculum development.
  • Sylvia Yuen, director of the Center on the Family in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. She serves as principal investigator and co-principal investigator for a large number of grants, which bring in millions of dollars to the university.

The Robert W. Clopton Award recognizes faculty who provide academic expertise to improve the community. The recipient is:

  • Michael Hamnett, director of the Social Science Research Institute in the College of Social Sciences. He addresses pressing social and environmental issues and works to secure money for these projects.


Star's CEO recognized

John Fujieki, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president of Star Markets, has been honored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Hawai'i with the Bruce Koppel Memorial Award.

Fujieki, who is also on the Kuakini Foundation board of directors, was recognized for his achievements, dedication to the community and contributions to the retail industry.


Lawyers group elects president

Kim Jean Kim, an attorney at Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert, has been named president of the Korean American Bar Association of Hawai'i.

  • Chuck Choi of Wagner Choi & Evers, treasurer.
  • Rex Kim, secretary.
