Sibayan fires 71 to capture Hickam golf title

Kaua'i's Shannon Sibayan shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the Hickam Invitational at Mamala Bay Golf Course.

Sibayan, 29, finished the three-day tournament at 3-under-par 213, two strokes ahead of Randy Shibuya, who closed with a 68.

Joe Phengsavath shot a 72 to finish third at 221, followed by Del-Marc Fujita (70-223).

Kramer Aoki (75), Mark West (70), and 12-year-old Michelle Wie (74) were tied at 224.

Other winners were Patrick Nishi (A flight), Leighton Uyeda (B flight), Mervin Matsumoto (seniors) and Wendell Kop (super seniors).

• King Kekaulike 14, St. Anthony 6: Ikaika Mawae rushed for two touchdowns as host King Kekaulike beat St. Anthony in a Maui Interscholastic League game Saturday.

Mawae scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and a 14-yard run in the fourth.

• Kaiser needs coach: Kaiser High School is looking for a varsity girls soccer coach.

Robyn Chun, Kaiser's coach since at least 1998, resigned.

Applicants can either fax a resume to 394-1247 or call athletic director Ricky Shimokawa at 394-1231.

• 'Aiea needs coaches: 'Aiea High is seeking boys and girls tennis coaches and a coach for girls water polo, which makes its debut in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association next spring.

Resumes should be sent to athletic director Roy Miyoga, 'Aiea High School, 98-1276 Ulune St., 'Aiea, HI 96701. Deadline is Sept. 30.

SOCCER

• MISO heats up: Another Men's Island Soccer Organization (MISO) season is under way with four new teams, bringing the total in Divisions I and II of the adult amateur league to 22.

The MISO masters division (over 45 years) has added one new team and now has six.

There are about 600 players among the three divisions, according to MISO president Sergio Bolioli.

Games are played Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex and Monday and Friday evenings at Ala Wai Field.

Defending champions are: division I: HPU White; division II: Hurricanes (since promoted to Division I); masters: Honolulu International.

Division I teams play 12 games each, division II 14 and masters 10 games. Championship games are Dec. 15.

The new teams in division I are International Honolulu, Focus, Kahekili and Air Force Hawai'i. The new Masters team is Honolulu United.
