Shooting-range benefit event

Residents can help feed the needy and celebrate the 31st National Hunting and Fishing Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 and 29 at the Koko Head public shooting range, on Kalaniana'ole Highway past the entrance to Hanauma Bay.

For every canned food item or $1 cash donation, participants get a coupon to enter several contests, including shooting skeet, .22-caliber rifles and handguns, muzzleloaders, archery, airgun or a fish-casting competition.

"Since the events of 9/11 there are still many families of laid-off workers in Hawai'i who are in need of assistance," said Wendell Kam, state Department of Land and Natural Resources Hunter Education Program coordinator.

Last year the event raised 1,100 pounds of food and about $750.
