Honolulu Police Department officer Johnny Agoo kisses his child, Joie, 6 months, after winning a bronze medal of valor today at HPD headquarters. Agoo, Tay Deering, Ervine Kaulia and Ronald Jacobs were all honored by Chief Lee Donohue for “gallantry in the performance of duty.” Agoo, Deering and Kaulia rescued a man from a burning vehicle on Jan. 21, while Jacobs prevented a woman from jumping from a freeway overpass Oct. 1.

Missing Mo'ili'ili man found today

An 82-year-old Mo'ili'ili man, who was reported missing Sept. 12, was found today in downtown Honolulu. An employee of American Savings Bank's Bishop Square branch at 180 S. King St. notified police when Hiroki Sanada attempted to make a cash withdrawal using his credit card at 8:45 a.m.

Police had been notified that Sanada had used the card at a different branch last week.

Maui man charged with sex assault

A 30-year-old Maui man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman Saturday in a Kalihi parking lot on Middle Street.

Richard Vera of 480 Kenolio Rd., Maui, was charged yesterday with first-degree sex assault and is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. The 36-year-old victim of the alleged attack had recently accepted a job to work for Vera's Kihei-based ministry, police said.

Woman killed in crash identified

The woman killed in a two-car accident Saturday on Pa'akea Road in Ma'ili was identified today by the medical examiner's office as Judith Gouveia, 57, of Wai'anae.

Man questioned about boy's injuries

Kaua'i police arrested a 34-year-old Kapa'a man for questioning about injuries sustained by a 22-month-old boy, who is listed in critical condition at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children. The man, who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault Thursday, was released without charges pending further investigation. The child has been hospitalized on O'ahu since Sept. 6.

Official says school fire deliberate

An early-morning fire today at Kalakaua Middle School that officials believe was deliberately set caused an estimated $5,000 damage to a portable building classroom. Nearby residents reported the fire at 821 Kalihi St. at 2:11 a.m.

Paper soaked with flammable liquid was used to start the fire at seven different points, according to fire investigator Capt. Glenn Solem. The fire caused mainly scorching damage to the structure.
