Local actress goes Broadway, baby!

ECHEVARRIA
Nataysha Echevarria, 12, of Kailua, has been tapped by Welly Yang, artistic director of Second Generation, to be the local cast member for "Hello Broadway," a musical revue playing Oct. 5 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Nataysha comes from a theatrical family; she has extensive stage credits in such shows as "South Pacific" at the Castle Performing Arts Center, "A Christmas Carol" for Honolulu Dance Theatre, and "Oliver" at Diamond Head Theatre.

Nataysha will sing "Broadway Baby" from the Stephen Sondheim musical "Follies," and join other cast members in song.

You can push, but you cannot shove

Honolulu's tai chi grand master Dong Zeng Chen will hold a free martial arts demonstration showcasing a simplified form of sparring called "pushing hands" at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, at the Sun Yat Sen School (135 N. Kukui St., across from Borthwick Mortuary).

The two-person tai chi exercise is a gentle sport of control where one person wins by upsetting the other's balance. As the match begins, opponents use their hands to push against each other, trying to control the other's energy. No shoving is allowed.

When performed correctly, the motion of tai chi reflects the opposing influences of yin and yang.

Islanders divided over Mrs. America

BERGER

STARK
There's only one Mrs. Hawaii competing for the national crown in this week's Mrs. America Pageant, but there will be two island cheering sections at preliminaries tonight.

A former Miss Thailand World, Helen Berger, 30, lived here for five years as a military dependent and returned to Hawai'i last year with her husband and infant daughter. She won the Mrs. Hawaii title in June.

The second champion for the local crowd will be the Colorado-born Emily Stark, whose high school days were spent on Maui.

She became the focus of widespread media attention not from her Mrs. Colorado crown but after her twin daughters were born joined at the base of the spine last year. Surgeries successfully separated the twins when the girls were 7 months old.

Tonight's preliminaries begin at 6 p.m. in the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, with the contest's finals set for 6 p.m. Friday on the lagoon lawn.

Tickets cost $50 tonight; admission to Friday's black-tie event is $60. Information: 949-4321, ext. 312.
