Seasiders cruise to volleyball victory

Chun Yi Lin and Yu Chuan Weng each had 20 kills as No. 2 Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Western New Mexico last night at the Cannon Activities Center.

The scores were 30-17, 30-24, 30-28.

St. Francis graduate Kimberly Tano had nine kills and 14 digs, and Kahuku graduate Malia Kauhi had 17 assists for Western New Mexico (8-5 overall, 0-3 PacWest).

Earlier yesterday, BYUH (11-0, 2-0) moved up a spot to No. 2 in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Poll.

Hawai'i Pacific (7-3) remained at No. 24 for the second week in a row.

Hilo loses in five: Sara Pilgreen had 35 kills and hit .414, but Hawai'i-Hilo fell to Montana State-Billings in five games last night at Waiakea High School.

The scores were 22-30, 27-30, 30-23, 31-29, 15-11.

Olivia Munro had 24 kills to lead Montana State-Billings (5-8 overall, 1-3 PacWest).

Hilo fell to 5-7 and 1-1.

PacWest weekly honors: Hawai'i-Hilo's Sara Pilgreen and Hawai'i Pacific's Susy Garbelotti were named women's volleyball Pacific West Conference Co-Players of the Week after leading their teams to conference-opening victories.

Garbelotti knocked down 19 kills against Western New Mexico Saturday.

Pilgreen had 19 kills against Western New Mexico Friday.

GOLF

Matsumoto, Kop win: Merv Matsumoto and Wendell Kop won the championships of the 2002 Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational yesterday.

Matsumoto closed with a 2-over-par 73. His two-day total of 148 was two better than Kim Von Tempsky (72).

Kop captured the Super Seniors (65-older) title, closing with a 77 for a 158 total — seventh-best overall. That was four shots better than Ron Coker (84).

Lee shoots 66: After opening with one of his highest rounds in weeks, Hawai'i's Regan Lee went low in yesterday's second round of The Gateway Tour's Johnson Bank Invitational.

Lee shot a 5-under-par 66 at the Tonto Verde Ranch Course, near Phoenix. He is tied for 37th, at 2-under 140, going into the final two rounds. Chris Ming leads the tournament by five strokes at 12-under 130.

Rainbows finish last: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished last in the 18-team Shanico Invitational yesterday at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.

The Rainbows shot a final-round 336 for a 974 total. California defended its title, shooting 884.
