The Honolulu Fire Department has been awarded nearly $750,000 in federal money for equipment upgrades and training following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The $749,315 grant from the Federal Management Agency and the United States Fire Administration will go to upgrading fire ground communication, purchasing new breathing equipment and oxygen tanks, and improving the department's physical fitness and wellness program, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

In accepting the grant, the Honolulu Fire Department is required to come up with an additional 30 percent in matching money for a total of $1.07 million.
