Ka'a'awa post office closed after device found

Advertiser Staff

The discovery of a suspicious package containing a fireworks explosive forced the closure of the Ka'a'awa post office today.

Postal personnel were evacuated at 9:15 a.m. after an employee noticed what he thought was a pipe bomb in the newspaper stand of the post office parking lot at 51-480 Kamehameha Highway across from Swanzy Beach Park, according to Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

The package contained a pipe, about 6 to 10 inches long and 3 inches wide.

Fire crews evacuated the post office and a nearby restaurant and daycare center, and secured a 200-foot radius around the package.

Honolulu police's Specialized Services Division bomb unit was called at 11 a.m. to Ka'a'awa and at 12:20 p.m. removed the device, which appeared to be a fireworks explosive device, Soo said.
