Missing Mo'ili'ili man found safe

An 82-year-old Mo'ili'ili man, who was reported missing Sept. 12, was found yesterday in downtown Honolulu.

An employee of American Savings Bank's Bishop Square branch at 180 S. King St. notified police when Hiroki Sanada attempted to make a cash withdrawal using his credit card at 8:45 a.m.

Police had been notified that Sanada had used the card at a different branch last week.

Sanada was deemed uninjured and healthy and has returned to his family, police said.


Toddler's injuries lead to arrest

Kaua'i police arrested a 34-year-old Kapa'a man for questioning about injuries suffered by a 22-month-old boy, who is listed in critical condition at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault last Thursday, was released without charges pending further investigation. The child has been hospitalized on O'ahu since Sept. 6.


Maui man charged in Kalihi assault

A 30-year-old Maui man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman Saturday in a Kalihi parking lot on Middle Street.

Richard Vera of 480 Kenolio Road, Maui, was charged yesterday with first-degree sex assault and is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. The 36-year-old victim of the alleged attack had recently accepted a job to work for Vera's Kihei-based ministry, police said.


Kalakaua Middle fire was intentional

An early-morning fire yesterday at Kalakaua Middle School that was deliberately set caused an estimated $5,000 damage to a portable building classroom. Nearby residents reported the fire at 821 Kalihi St. at 2:11 a.m.

Newspapers soaked with flammable liquid were used to start the fire at seven different points, according to fire investigator Capt. Glenn Solem.


Ma'ili fatality was Wai'anae woman

The woman killed in a two-car collision Saturday on Pa'akea Road in Ma'ili was identified yesterday by the city medical examiner's office as Judith Gouveia, 57, of Wai'anae.


Woman arrested in attempted murder

A 37-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday night in Wahiawa on suspicion of attempted murder after she allegedly drove a van at a police officer on a bicycle on Kukui Street. The officer was not injured. The driver had consumed alcohol, which may have been a contributing factor, police said.
